That's my rosemary. Do you think it will make it till spring?
That's the basil. I already know it's long dead.
Remember my gnarly tomato plants from summer? Yeah. That's them.
And that's the pretty morning glory which wasn't supposed to be growing with the vegetables, but the garden was neglected when I started the new job and the Hunny was replacing siding all summer.
Hey! There's my friend Herb! It's actually the Hunny's friend Herb. Chocolate mint my mom gave him for his June birthday.
To really make the day grand, I hunted down a recipe for a treat my mom made often when I was growing up. It was always my favorite. Anyone out there ever make Welsh cakes? Because these were very yummy, but they fell apart. Not that anyone seemed to mind.
Here they are after being patted out and cut:
I substituted a third of the shortening with real butter, nice and cold from the fridge. Here they are in the pan:
I used the pan instead of an electric griddle. My electric griddle hasn't seen the light of day in three years. Here they are on the plate:
I also used raisins and dried cranberries instead of currants. I didn't have currants. Here they are right before one is popped into my mouth:
They were incredibly yummy. Wanna see the recipe? I found it at Cooks dot com:
Essentially they're griddle cooked scones, instead of baked. Mmm. Perfect on a cold day home from school! Try them! You'll like them.
Until I write again ...

Ooh, yummy!!! I forgot about those. :) I need to add that recipe to my collection.
And if I ever dig my stuff out of storage, I'll have lots more to share.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't clean out my garden from last fall. I figure it's not hurting anything, right? Or is it secretly destroying the topsoil over winter? That would be my luck.
Wow. They look wonderful. I am definately going to try them.
I love the first picture of the Rosemary. Ice it so pretty. So long as you can stay off the roads during the storm. It isn't at all pretty if you have to go somewhere.
Your icy herb garden is beautiful but I don't think it will taste very yummy. Now those cakes on the other hand... I think I'm going to send our for scones. :-)
And I kept thinking 'she's going to use her iced herbs in her scones'. Boy was I ever wrong ... I dont cook as you know but I did once and I wonder if sub'ing the shortening with butter made them less ... sturdy?
Skillet scones? I think the butter sub is risky with biscuits and scones, texture wise. But the taste is divine! Those look really good!
A cozy day chez Flea and family! Love it.
Followed your link home from Daryl's. Glad I did: your blog's an absolute delight!
The ice pics are gorgeous. Even if everything underneath never comes back, you've captured an ethereal beauty in these photos. Living as I do in the Great White North, I so relate!
Oooooh I shiver to think what that ice is doing to your plants . . . but it sure makes for some pretty pics! : D [Dare I mention that my rosemary blooms away and I even saw a red-throated hummer partying amongst the blossoms today?]
I am a SCONE LOVER!!! I've never tried these beauties . . . til now! Thanks for sharing the receipt. ; )
STAY WARM!!!
Griddle Scones! Two of my favorite words put together! I will have to try these very soon.
Hope you are keeping warm with all of that ice! Glad you have power, too.
The ice looks really pretty on everything, of course that's easy for me to say I'm not living with it!
The welsh cakes look really yummy!
Icy outside, warm and toasty inside with fresh bakery. Sounds like my house on a winter day! Hope your neighborhood is weathering the storm well.
My kids kept asking when I was going to go outside and take pictures. I was waiting for the sun, but it never came. I took a few when I went out to do a quick shovel. Over eight inches here and more coming tomorrow. Kids have been home for two days now.
Love the sparkly herbs... I'm sorry, but I don't think they'll make it through to spring. Quality time with the kids though! Yes, I can look at it like this now that they're grown.
;-)
Where are the optimists? Most of those plants will come up from old seeds in the spring. You can't get rid of mint or morning glories and I think rosemary is indestructible, just cut back the dead wood. The photos are fabulous, really cool icy shots.
Contrasting the icy wonderland is the warmth of home baking the promise of butter, the flakiness of bisquits....oh lawdy I would sure like to come over about now!
Great post!
Currants?
I need to find a winter recipe with currants. I am suddenly hungry for currants.
PS. I do not even own an IPOD. Congrats on yours.
Brrrr, I was cold looking through your post pics, but your ending pics made up for it :)
We can't even keep basil alive inside, it's just not bright enough.
But the garden is really pretty even covered with snow--
The ice pictures are beautiful!!! I have never had a Welsh cake. They look divine!
You just made my day! My Welsh grandma used to make these for us and I can taste them as I type. I will definitely be giving this recipe ago - thank you!
Oh those look so good. Must try them.
