Stupid Martha Stewart

I'm an idiot. Learn from me.

Y'all know those neck warmers I make, the ones filled with seeds and essential peppermint oil? These?

I came across directions for some scrumptious little hand warmers in an old issue of a Martha Stewart magazine someone gave me and thought, "Oo! This solves all my problems!" The problems being that every warmer I make smells funky after a few uses, regardless of the seed I use or the type of scent. Ew.

Martha's warmers use ceramic pie weights as the filler. I went out yesterday, after calling all over town to find them, and bought a package of ceramic pie weights. Very pretty things. Nice weight to them. Seem to be perfect for what I need them for.

As soon as I got home, I made a couple of little hand warmers for my Hunny (he helps direct traffic at church on Sunday mornings), then made myself a neck warmer. Mmm. I was looking forward to using it RIGHT THEN. So I heated it. And heated it. Two minutes seemed about right. Made it with my usual flannel.

After about 40 minutes I thought maybe I hadn't heated it enough the first time, since the beads were cold and they were supposed to hold the heat, being ceramic and all. So I heated it again.

Less than two minutes in, I walk into the kitchen and smell something burning. The stench is horrid. I started fans going and a candle burning. Lookit:

Ceramic beads are clearly not the answer to all my problems. Dang it. Back to the old drawing board.

Until I write again ...

OOPS!
Didn't set off the smoke alarm did ya?

I did... in an 108 bed nursing home in Tulsa OK. Yep.. I was the night house supervisor, thinking I was smart and all. I heated a hospital er standard issue blanket in the micro. for 2 minutes. I opened the door and poof! flamage, smoke and bells. Thank goodness for big shower rooms and hoses.
Ya know when you do something in a public facility in Tulsa that the fire department comes at the least little thing?... yep.

Nothing like setting things on FIRE! to give a little kick to your day. Good thing no explosions and flying objects. Never trust Martha Stewart. She went to jail for telling lies.

42 minutes in a microwave? You are lucky the microwave didnt explode.

I adore my Flea-made neck warmer!

I clearly blame Martha. You were just following directions.

I am with the other Karen....I blame Martha too. She should have either A.) given instructions to prevent burning or B.) warned you that you were going to need a fire extinguisher.

Martha sucks! I find half the things in those books/mags have never been tried before. I've heard of using rice, salt, wheat, and corn. You know, they're cheap enough to just throw out after awhile. Or leave in the car of someone you don't care for to attract rats. Then you get two uses in one. Recycling.

The neckwarmer I have is filled with corn. I like the idea of rice for handwarmers.

Martha is out to get you. This is proof.
I knew I couldn't trust her!

Uncooked rice. It still gets a slight odor, but it's nice and comforting in a rice pudding sort of way, not a stinky did the dog fart sort of way.

we've got a few, and I can tell you that they will unfreeze a stray cat for rescue.
